Photomechanical remodeling for scars with a pigmentation component

PicoLaser is particularly valuable for acne scars that also carry a pigmentation component (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation overlying a depressed scar). Its photomechanical effect remodels collagen within the scar while simultaneously clearing the associated discoloration — addressing both dimensions of the scar in one treatment.

How it works

In addition to its melanin-shattering effect, PicoLaser's pressure wave creates micro-cavitation bubbles within the dermis that mechanically disrupt the dense, disorganized collagen architecture of scar tissue without ablating the surface. This 'laser-induced optical breakdown' triggers a collagen remodeling response that gradually reorganizes the scar matrix. Fractional PicoLaser modes (LIOB — laser-induced optical breakdown) can be targeted to specific scar depths, allowing precise collagen stimulation at the level of the scar floor. The simultaneous clearance of overlying PIH means that scars that appear dark and textured can see improvement in both dimensions simultaneously.

What to expect

Topical numbing is applied. The treatment feels similar to standard PicoLaser — a snapping sensation with mild warmth. Treatment time varies by the number of scars addressed. Redness and mild swelling follow.

Downtime and aftercare

Minimal for standard PicoLaser. Fractional modes may cause 2–3 days of mild texture changes and redness.

Results
