The Thulium laser (Lavieen) is a non-ablative fractional laser that delivers exceptional skin remodeling results with a significantly better safety profile for melanin-rich skin tones than ablative options. It's the preferred resurfacing technology in Korean aesthetics for its balance of efficacy and safety.

How it works

The Lavieen's 1927nm thulium wavelength targets the superficial dermis with high water absorption, creating micro-thermal zones of controlled injury surrounded by unaffected tissue. This fractional approach (treating only 15–30% of the skin surface per session) allows rapid healing from adjacent untreated tissue while still triggering substantial collagen remodeling. Unlike ablative lasers, the epidermis remains intact — significantly reducing the risk of PIH, particularly important in Fitzpatrick III–VI skin tones that are more prone to paradoxical darkening. The thulium wavelength also has specific affinity for dyschromia (pigmentation irregularities), offering dual benefit for scars that also carry pigment changes.

What to expect

Numbing cream is applied for 30 minutes. The laser handpiece is moved methodically across the treatment area. A snapping sensation and mild heat are typical. Immediately after, skin is pink/red and may have a superficial texture change. Swelling is mild to moderate.

Downtime and aftercare

Mild-moderate. 3–5 days of redness, mild swelling, and a sand-paper texture as the micro-zones heal. Skin returns to normal in 5–7 days. Excellent choice for patients who cannot tolerate significant downtime.

Results

Meaningful improvement in scar texture, skin smoothness, and pigmentation over a series of 3–5 treatments. Particularly well-suited to patients with darker skin who are not candidates for more aggressive ablative options.
