Ablative precision that removes scarred tissue and rebuilds from scratch
Erbium laser resurfacing ablates (vaporizes) the damaged surface layers of the skin with extreme precision, removing scarred epidermis and upper dermis to trigger full-thickness skin renewal. It offers among the most dramatic improvements possible in a single or small number of sessions — at the cost of more significant downtime.
How it works
The Erbium:YAG laser at 2940nm is highly absorbed by water in skin tissue. This tight absorption means extremely precise ablation with very little collateral thermal damage to surrounding tissue — unlike older CO2 lasers. Each pass of the laser removes a precise, controlled layer of skin. Fully ablated zones undergo complete renewal: new epidermis migrates from adjacent areas and hair follicles within 5–7 days, while the dermal wound-healing response produces substantial new collagen. Scar tissue — which is architecturally different from normal skin — is removed and replaced with newly synthesized, more normally organized collagen. Fractional erbium (where only a fraction of skin is ablated per pass) creates columns of treatment surrounded by unaffected tissue, dramatically accelerating healing while maintaining significant efficacy.
What to expect
Topical and/or local anesthesia is used. Full ablative resurfacing produces significant post-procedure weeping and rawness. Fractional erbium has a milder response. The procedure itself takes 30–60 minutes. Extensive post-procedure care instructions are provided.
Downtime and aftercare
Full ablative: 7–14 days of significant healing (open wound care), pinkness for up to 3 months. Fractional: 3–7 days of redness, peeling, and swelling. Not a 'lunch hour' treatment — plan for real downtime.
