How it works
Modern hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers are gel-like substances that integrate into the tissue planes where they're placed. HA is naturally occurring in the body, making filler highly biocompatible. Different filler formulations have different rheological properties (thickness, elasticity, cohesiveness) — Dr. Kim selects specific products for specific anatomical zones. Thick, highly elastic fillers support bone-level structure (cheeks, chin, jawline). Softer, more pliable fillers are ideal for areas requiring natural movement (lips, under-eyes). HA fillers also stimulate some collagen production at the injection site and can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if desired — providing a safety net. Strategic placement in the deep fat compartments and periosteum (bone layer) allows structural support that lifts the entire face rather than simply adding volume locally.
What to expect
Most modern fillers contain lidocaine, making the injection increasingly comfortable as the session progresses. Topical numbing is also applied beforehand. Dr. Kim injects slowly and methodically, assessing facial symmetry throughout. Some areas require cannula technique (a blunt-tipped device that causes less bruising than needles) for safety and comfort.
Downtime and aftercare
Minimal to moderate depending on area. Bruising is possible (especially in vascular areas like the lips and under-eyes) and typically resolves in 5–10 days. Swelling for 1–3 days. Results are immediately visible and improve further once swelling resolves at 2 weeks.
