How it works
The Er:YAG laser emits a wavelength of 2940 nm — the peak absorption wavelength of water in tissue. When the laser pulse contacts the lesion, intracellular water rapidly vaporizes, ablating a precise layer of tissue with each pass. Because energy absorption occurs so efficiently at this wavelength, thermal diffusion to surrounding skin is minimal (< 50 microns). Dr. Kim treats each lesion in controlled passes, inspecting depth after each pass, until the lesion is fully removed. The result is a clean wound bed at the level of normal dermis that heals with minimal scarring. Topical anesthetic is applied 30–45 minutes before treatment for maximum comfort.
What to expect
A topical numbing cream is applied 30–45 minutes before your appointment. Each lesion takes 2–5 minutes to treat depending on size. You'll feel a brief sensation with each pulse — most patients describe it as a mild snapping or warmth. Immediately after, the treated area appears pink or raw with a small crust forming within 24 hours. For skin tags, treatment is often complete in a single pass. For raised or deeper moles, 1–2 passes may be needed.
Downtime and aftercare
Minimal. The treated area crusts and heals within 5–10 days. Avoid picking the crust. Sun protection is essential for 4–6 weeks post-treatment to prevent post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Results
Most lesions are completely removed in a single session. The skin heals flat with minimal to no visible scarring, particularly when sun protection protocols are followed. Small pink marks fade over 4–8 weeks. For pigmented lesions, the area may appear lighter than surrounding skin initially, then normalize.
