The gold standard in precision pigment correction

PicoLaser delivers ultra-short bursts of energy measured in picoseconds (trillionths of a second) to shatter melanin clusters into microscopic particles the body can clear naturally. It outperforms older nanosecond lasers on virtually every pigmentation type — from sun spots and melasma to post-inflammatory marks — with fewer sessions and less thermal injury to surrounding skin.

How it works

Traditional lasers destroy pigment through heat (photothermal effect). PicoLaser works primarily through a photomechanical (photoacoustic) effect: pulses so short that energy is delivered before the surrounding tissue can absorb heat. This creates a pressure wave that shatters melanin into tiny particles without burning surrounding skin cells. The immune system then clears the debris through normal lymphatic drainage. Because less heat is involved, the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) — a paradoxical darkening common with older lasers, especially on darker skin tones — is dramatically reduced. Different wavelengths (532nm, 755nm, 1064nm) allow Dr. Kim to target different depths and pigment types precisely.

What to expect

After a topical numbing cream is applied for 20–30 minutes, Dr. Kim passes the laser handpiece over the treatment area in a methodical pattern. You'll feel a snapping or rubber-band sensation. The session itself takes 20–30 minutes. Immediately after, the treated areas may appear slightly red and spots may look temporarily darker (the 'frosting' effect) — this is normal and resolves within days as the pigment rises to the surface and flakes off naturally.

Downtime and aftercare

Minimal. Most patients return to normal activities the same day. Expect mild redness for 1–2 hours. Darkening of spots for 5–7 days before they flake off. Sun protection (SPF 50+) is mandatory during the full treatment course.

Results

Visible lightening begins after the first session. Optimal results — typically 70–90% improvement in spot intensity — are achieved after 3–5 sessions. Melasma may require additional maintenance sessions. Results are long-lasting with proper sun protection.
