Chemical Peels Q & A

What are chemical peels?

A chemical peel is a topical treatment that uses an acidic solution to exfoliate the skin. Once applied, a chemical peel carefully removes the skin’s surface to eliminate dead skin cells and other impurities. Chemical peels rejuvenate your complexion by removing damage, allowing fresh, untouched skin to come to the surface.

Chemical peels are safe, non-invasive treatments Dr. Kim can tailor to meet your needs and aesthetic goals.

How do chemical peels work?

Chemical peels contain various medical-grade acids, such as glycolic and salicylic acid. When applied to the skin, the solution sparks a chemical reaction that causes the outer layer to slough off. Your skin’s outer layer endures cosmetic and environmental damage that can affect its appearance and elasticity.

Removing dead skin cells and other damage from the surface triggers your body’s natural healing process, which causes it to produce new collagen and elastin. These proteins are vital in repairing skin damage for a smoother, tighter, clearer surface.

Are there different types of chemical peels?

There are three levels of chemical peels:

Light peels (superficial)

Light peels use mild acids, such as alpha-hydroxy or glycolic acid, to eliminate superficial damage, such as acne scars, fine lines, and mild sun damage. Superficial peels are quick and require no downtime.

Medium peels

Medium peels use trichloroacetic acid (TCA) to penetrate further into the skin than superficial peels. A medium peel can address deeper skin concerns, such as wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, brown spots, and actinic keratoses (precancerous growths). These treatments are more intense than light peels and require several days of recovery.

Deep peels

Deep peels are intense cosmetic treatments that use phenol to penetrate even deeper into the skin than medium peels. A deep peel can dramatically enhance the tone and texture of your skin, targeting deep wrinkles, skin laxity, and sun damage. While downtime can last a few weeks, you only need one deep peel.
